ABSTRACT Most of Alabama is underlain by strata that Conned in marine or coastal environments. Many of Alabama's ancient rocks contain fossil reefs and mounds. Two examples of these ancicnt buildups are described. These are Mississippian reefs and mounds exposcd at the surface in central and north Alabama and Jurassic mounds in the subsurface of southwest Alabama.
